The History of Detroit’s MGM Grand
In November of 1996, voters in the state of Michigan approved Proposal E, an application which allowed for three casinos to be built in and operated by the city of Detroit. After the bidding process was completed, MGM Mirage and Partners Detroit, LLC, made up of a band of locally based investors, began building the first of these casinos. The official opening of the MGM Grand Detroit was held on the 29th of July 1999.
MGM Grand Detroit was very nearly sold in 2005 when its parent company, MGM Mirage, announced its intentions to acquire the Mandalay Resort Group company, which owned the MotorCity casino. Michigan’s state laws prohibit casino owners to acquire or possess more than one of these types of businesses, putting MGM Mirage in the position of having to release either the MGM Grand Detroit or MotorCity. While several serious offers were made on the MGM Grand Detroit, MGM Mirage eventually decided to sell MotorCity casino instead.
